Karain is a Confederate member world that legally seceded from the Federation. Its former status remains important to how its inhabitants understand their position among other worlds.

Legacy and security

Karain retains a sense of being more advanced and materially comfortable than much of Confederate space. That is a local self-perception, rather than an established ranking of living standards.

Its Federation legacy also makes security an anxious subject. The world has something it values and believes it may be entitled to retain, while belonging to an alliance whose defenses depend on shared ships and commitments. The exact protections associated with its secession are not specified.

Approaches and common defense

Karain’s approaches connect to the theta-mu corridor. The routes carry freight, replacement assemblies, medical evacuation vessels, and the crews needed to maintain its defenses. Decisions about escort deployment therefore affect both military readiness and civilian life.

A world beyond its delegation

The novel first gives Karain a voice through the Congress. It also identifies the young corvette captain Simon “Sim” King as Karain-born. Neither a delegate’s argument nor one captain’s temperament represents the whole world. Karaini culture looks at the broader inherited identity of the world.
