# Unity drive

Interstellar travel

A drive that makes the distances between worlds endurable by taking ships into higher-dimensional space.

Unity drives make interstellar travel practical in the setting of *Emissary*. Conventional movement remains constrained by the speed of light. A Unity drive moves a ship into higher-dimensional space, allowing a journey to be planned in travel legs rather than human lifetimes.

## Distance and transit

Unity travel changes how a crew can cross the distances between worlds. It does not make those journeys instantaneous. Routes, drive capability, and transit times remain practical concerns for a vessel such as the [Rebel Ascendant](https://emissary.mdscur.com/encyclopedia/rebel-ascendant/).

The experience of Unity space is distinct from an ordinary view of the stars. The novel introduces its behavior through the crew’s use of it rather than through a complete technical specification.

## Messages arrive late

Communication has its own limits. Relays and courier drones carry messages that arrive already old, with light-speed transmission still part of the system. A ship’s ability to travel does not give its crew immediate, reliable knowledge of events elsewhere.

That delay matters to decisions. Information can be accurate when sent and inadequate by the time someone must act on it.
